Presented by
The Network of Biblical Storytellers, Int’l. and Brite Divinity School

Our sacred stories from the bible grew out of an oral tradition that can be reclaimed today to make them fresh and engaging for young and old, seekers and life-long disciples alike. Come and enjoy an evening of storytelling and hear some of your favorite stories anew. Return on Saturday to engage the practice for learning and telling sacred texts in a way that opens human hearts to the personal and social transformation proclaimed in the Gospel.

WORKSHOPS: (Workshops will be repeated. Participants choose two).

Interpreting Through Performance, Interpreting for Performance
Led by Phil Ruge-Jones

This workshop will focus on a new approach that is developing within biblical scholarship called Performance Criticism. We will explore the vantage points this new methodology offers as well as providing specific questions that a storyteller might ask in order to shape and then communicate their interpretation of a particular biblical text.

Blind Bartemaus – A Story-Learning Workshop
Led by Lynn White
This will be an experiential workshop in which participants will learn and “grow” the story of Blind Bartemaus (Mark 10:46-52). Using a variety of methods, we will “internalize” (rather than “memorize”) the story so that it can be told “by heart.” We will also explore how the story was heard in its original setting and how it connects with our experiences and our stories. (This story is also the Gospel lectionary text for October 25, 2009.)

Performing the Story With Different Audiences
Led by Kathy Culmer
Once you learn a biblical story, what can you do with it and where? From the sermon to the Sunday School lesson, to the stewardship campaign, with a few other stops in between; we will look at some practical ways to use biblical storytelling in ministry. We will explore ways of using and telling the biblical story in different contexts. Participants will create a “packet full of ways” to tell and use a biblical story.
