Luis first came to Texas in 1977 while serving in the United Sates Army. He led the Human Relations Program at the battalion level providing counsel and training on Race Relations and Diversity. He has an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology. As a licensed counselor he developed a multicultural practice.
Moreover, Luis holds a Master’s of Divinity degree and is an ordained minister with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He has pastored congregations, both Hispanic and Anglo, in Puerto Rico, Tennessee, and Florida. Luis has now returned to Texas to serve as Director of the Borderlands Center for Latina/o Church Studies. The Center is focused on how the growing Latina/o population challenges the traditional Christian approach to blending religion and culture.
